As education continues to evolve, so does the understanding of how physical space impacts learning. Classrooms today are expected to do more than house instruction – they must support collaboration, adaptability, inclusion and wellbeing. The design and functionality of these environments play a direct role in how students learn, engage and succeed.
At EDmarket, we believe that learning outcomes improve when learning environments are intentionally designed to meet the needs of students and educators. This belief is reflected in our updated mission and vision, which emphasize community, innovation and long-term impact.
A mission grounded in collaboration
EDmarket’s mission is to empower a diverse network of professionals – those who plan, design, furnish and lead – to create environments that support effective teaching and meaningful learning. Through research-informed content, professional development and opportunities to connect across disciplines, EDmarket supports those working to make a measurable difference in education.
A vision for student-centered spaces
The goal is clear: every student deserves a space where they feel supported, inspired and ready to learn. These spaces aren’t one-size-fits-all. They require thoughtful planning, inclusive design and a willingness to adapt to evolving needs. When the environment aligns with the learner, the results are powerful.
“EDmarket is where connection meets purpose,” said Darlene Akers, chair of the EDmarket Board of Directors. “This vision reflects the day-to-day work of our community to create better spaces that help students succeed.”
Building capacity for impact
To help our members lead this change, EDmarket offers a variety of programs and initiatives:
- The Bold Women Collective supports leadership development and connection across roles and experience levels.
- NexGen Rising Stars elevates emerging professionals with fresh ideas and new perspectives.
- The Certified Learning Place Specialist (ECLPS) credential offers tools for designing learning spaces that directly support academic and developmental outcomes.
These initiatives are not just about professional growth. They’re about equipping individuals to influence how learning happens through the environments they help create.
Connecting the dots
Through providing thought-leadership to national events like EDspaces, curated design showcases like the EDgallery and ongoing content via Essentials magazine and EDchats, EDmarket fosters a community committed to continual learning and shared progress. We also bring together voices from across sectors through initiatives like the Chairman’s Roundtable, where timely challenges and collaborative solutions take center stage.
Looking ahead
As the education landscape continues to shift, so will the demands on learning environments. Those who understand this shift – and who are prepared to meet it – will play a key role in shaping what comes next.
At EDmarket, we’re here to support that effort through resources, community and a shared commitment to elevating outcomes by reimagining the spaces where learning happens. Learn more at edmarket.org.
